Humans with Bouquets: Dustin

One of my favorite places at the San Francisco Flower Mart is Torchio Nursery. Started in 1985 by Darrell Torchio, it is one of the best spots inside the Mart. It was natural that I would ask Darrell's son Dustin - who I see and work with all of the time - to be one of my humans. So, a couple of weeks ago NRU and I went to the flower mart and took some fun shots of Dustin at work. It was a blast going to the flower mart at a regular hour of the morning (not at the crack of dawn like I usually do), and for the sole purpose of photographing Dustin, and without getting caught in the hustle and bustle of work. You see, when your job is floral design and your obsession is to put unique florals arrangements together, the people who supply the flowers become so important in your life. I mean, where would I be if I didn't have people like Dustin finding and stashing the flowers that I want away in their fridge? Not only do I get what I want, but it is brought to me in the best condition and with a welcoming and awesome smile to top it off!

Thank you Torchio Nursery - and a special thank you to Dustin for being a very cool human!

This cool chair just lives out in the alley right behind Torchio where all the flowers are recieved and sorted. To be honest, I had never been out back before. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com | Photography: N.R. Underwood / nruphoto.com

Check out all of the buckets...there were a lot more near where Dustin was standing. I should also add that there was a lot of teasing going on by the rest of the Torchio crew, but Dustin took it all like a champ! Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com | Photography: N.R. Underwood / nruphoto.com

San Francisco Flower Mart

San Francisco Flower Mart is my second home, and today I want to share with you some of my favorite things about this lovely place. I don't think there is anything else that could get me out of bed willingly as early as 4am other than the fact that I love what I do - and a great part of why I love what I do is this exceptional flower mart in the SOMA district. For starters, I love watching a beautiful city like San Francisco wake up. I love the hustle and bustle that goes on at the flower mart when the rest of the city is still dark and sleepy, and of course some of the views that I encounter at sunrise on my drive back are just spectacular. tulipina.com / Kiana Underwood

I usually don't plan the type of arrangements I am going to do for my events until I actually go to the flower mart, as it is a great source of inspiration in and of itself. Every season of the year I can find amazing varieties of flowers and greens. Above all, everyone that I encounter at the flower mart is always very pleasant and helpful. Over time, several vendors have become part of my regular rounds, either because their selections fit with my floral design style, or simply because I enjoy chatting with them. One of the first places that I stop is J & J Nursery.

Mr. Garcia is another awesome guy to see at the flower mart. He knows quite a lot about flowers and plants and I just like him. I often buy my fruit branches and blossoms when they are in season from Garcia Greens.

Torchio Nursery is another wonderful place to find pretty much everything that you need - from garden roses to water lilles, succulents and geranium - they have it all. They too are quite friendly and helpful. I always make sure to visit the flower mart on days that I know they are there - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Brannan Street is another absolutely marvelous place to explore. After having visited New York's Flower District for a wedding I did on Long Island last summer, I decided that I would have everything shipped from West Coast to East Coast and Brannan Street did it all. They shipped the most beautiful flowers in perfect packaging and everything I asked for was there. In addition, I have a favorite person who I see there. He is most pleasant and we have become friends.

Last but not least is Florist-at-Large, which often has the most unusual stuff. I make sure to pay them a visit every time I am there, and if nothing else, I get to chit-chat with the owner, Vicky.
