Winter Styling: Antique Fruit Bowl

Happy Monday friends! I know that I missed my post last Friday, but it has been crazy busy for me between the holidays, weddings, and events. Nonetheless, here I am. Back in action! I warned you about my obsession with amaryllis during the holidays - it's just that they are readily available and in such beautiful variety that I can't hold back. For today's post I decided to use an antique fruit bowl I purchased at an estate sale some time ago as my floral vessel. The glass bowl has a wonderful pinkish hue, and a silver-plated holder with a lovely patina.

Flowers: hydrangea, amaryllis, passion vine, garden rose, hyacinth, geranium Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Begin with the vine. I used three stems total, two in this shot and the one more at the end. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Add the geranium. This particular kind is quite delicate and will wilt quickly if the stems are not in water. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Place the hyacinth on one side and allow them to drape a bit over the bowl. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Add the hydrangea. I'm generally not a big fan of hydrangea, but the lacecap variety is really lovely and you might see more of it being used in my future blog posts. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Arrange the amaryllis inside the vase. A great thing about amaryllis is that each stem can have up to 3-4 flowers, so you don't need that many total stems. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Finally, add the juliet garden rose. Also, remember that one stem of passion I had saved? I used it here to add a little more drama to the design! Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Winter Styling: Holiday Passion and Peonies

When it comes to holiday arrangements, peonies and passion flower might not be the first flowers that come to mind, as traditionally they have not been used during the holidays due to the fact that they are not generally available at this time of year. But, when I was at the market, I saw an abundance of beautiful passion vines (locally grown) as well as peonies (both from Chile and New Zealand). Begin by placing a couple of vines of the passion flowers in the vase. They will be used as the base of the arrangement. Save a vine or two for the final touches. As long as their stems are cut in an angle and in water the vines last a very long time and all of the buds will bloom into beautiful flowers. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Add the lovely nigella. I have used the nigella both as pods and flowers in arrangements. Both are beautiful, but when the flowers are fully opened they are so whimsical and delicate. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Now, add the viburnum. I love the hint of purple in these berries; the contrast really brings out the color of the peonies. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Add the garden roses to one side of the arrangement. These are from my garden, and in addition to being really ruffly, they smell heavenly. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Add the peonies. I only added three as they are so beautiful and big that there just aren't that many needed before they would overwhelm the arrangement! Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com

Here I took that passion vine that I was saving and made a loop on the side of the arrangement for some added beauty and volume. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com
