A Happy Start

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday season! Our family usually goes on a winter trip - either on a road trip, skiing/snowboarding, or out of the country. This year we got so busy that it left little time to plan a trip, and we decided to "staycation" it. I have to admit, as much as I love to travel, I really enjoyed staying home this year. It gave me the opportunity to do all that I wanted. So, for a couple of days straight I made arrangements for myself, and it was wonderful! After all, what I love most about my job is the creative aspect - so I'm pretty much in heaven when left alone to create without the hassle of dealing with the business side of things.

I had some leftover flowers from a photo shoot that I combined with some foraged goods from my garden (as well as our neighborhood). It was a pretty great mix to work with.

Here's what came out of those lovely peonies.

This is proof that you don't have to have a farm to create a farm arrangement. I am what you would call an "urban farmer". I live in an urban area 20 minutes outside of San Francisco and have managed to cultivate a lovely garden in my little backyard. With a little help from my garden and some locally grown flowers from the SF Flower Mart, I was able to create this arrangement.

The first bouquet of 2015

These were the most ruffley narcissus I ever did see. And they had the sweetest aroma.

I mixed the narcissus with some geranium, acacia, camellia, and privet from the garden. I love how different this arrangement turned out.

A very soft palette. I love the color of these hydrangeas from the garden this time of year. I mixed them with some camellias and pansies from my garden.

This arrangement from yesterday included everything from my garden sans the ranunculus. Citrus blossoms, hellebore, viola, hydrangea, rose, and snow bush.

Out of the three of my children, this sweet girl of mine is most willing to pose for me, so I would be a fool not to bank on that whenever I can. She has recently turned into a little hipster and I think it is quite cute! My husband has been saying: "I went to San Francisco and bought myself a little hipster child". Here she is, my lovely "human" number 6! Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com | Photography: N.R. Underwood / nruphoto.com

For this bouquet I wanted a soft and feminine palette. In my opinion nothing screams "soft and sweet" more than the combination below.

I am really enjoying doing this series. I spent a good portion of last weekend shooting more "humans" - beautiful ones - each in their own unique way. I can't wait to share them with you all. Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com | Photography: N.R. Underwood / nruphoto.com

Happy Monday friends! I had a very busy but wonderful weekend. My joint workshop with Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls went so well; we had a lovely and relaxing afternoon with 12 lovely ladies who joined us for calligraphy and floral design - the perfect way to spend a rainy San Francisco Saturday! So, coming out of such a great weekend I'm starting my week with a wild and vibrant bouquet and another human - my middle son who is quite "wild and vibrant" himself. I have been seeing water lilies at Torchio Nursery a lot lately; they are so beautiful and have a lovely scent, so I decided I wanted them in my bouquet along with some sweet peas and poppies for a happy and colorful combination.

My "too cool" skater wasn't so keen on posing for yet another one of his mom's blog posts, but he pulled it off and even gave us a nice smile. Thank you Aram - mom loves you! Kiana Underwood / tulipina.com | Photography: N. Underwood / nruphoto.com
